Environmental Groups Praise Progress On Bill

By Amy Harder, NationalJournal.com

Twenty environmental groups are hailing the progress that a key trio of senators is making on bringing climate and energy legislation to the Senate floor this year.

In a statement released this afternoon, the groups praised the senators' goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020, a pledge President Obama has committed to.

Roughly half of the groups that signed on to the statement, including the League of Conservation Voters and Union of Concerned Scientists, met with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., yesterday evening.

The groups said they will be working closely with the offices of Kerry and Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Joe Lieberman, I/D-Conn., to work out details of the bill, which they acknowledge in the statement "are not settled yet." Other groups represented include the Alliance for Climate Protection, Sierra Club, Environmental Defense Fund, Center for American Progress Action Fund and Natural Resources Defense Council.
