Lugar Introduces Clean Energy Mandate
By Darren Goode, NationalJournal.com
Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Richard Lugar of Indiana is drafting a climate and energy plan that would steer clear of bipartisan attempts to put a price on industrial carbon emissions.
Lugar's plan, announced this morning, would include a "clean energy" mandate for renewable sources, nuclear and cleaner uses of coal; retire high-polluting power plants; promote higher fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks; fully implement an existing renewable fuels production mandate; expand domestic offshore oil and gas drilling; and implement national energy efficiency standards for buildings, appliances and lighting.
Lugar is one of 14 senators invited to discuss energy legislation with President Obama and top energy and environment officials at the White House this afternoon.
