Murkowski-Jackson Correspondence Hits Snag

By Christopher Snow Hopkins, NationalJournal.com

Updated at 10:31 a.m. on March 30.

After exchanging letters with EPA chief Lisa Jackson, Sen. Lisa Murkowski has requested a tête-à-tête during the week of April 12.

"At this point, it does not seem probable that additional correspondence will elicit a sufficient level of detail for me and other members of Congress to understand what your agency is preparing to do," the Alaska Republican wrote to Jackson today.

Murkowski sent a letter to Jackson on March 5 with 13 questions related to the EPA's efforts to regulate greenhouse gases in compliance with the Clean Air Act. Jackson replied on March 26, but it appears Murkowski was not satisfied by her response.

"Regrettably, your letter fails to shed any new light on how your agency intends to implement its pending Clean Air Act regulations," Murkowski wrote today.

When asked about the transparency of the EPA's rollout strategy at a press conference today, Murkowski representative Robert Dillon said: "This is anything but a clear process. Administrator Jackson has repeatedly refused to provide details on how the EPA will implement climate regulations and who will inevitably be covered."

Today's letter comes on the heels of the EPA's announcement that it will proceed with plans to regulate emissions from large industrial plants, beginning in January 2011.

Jackson's office could not be reached for comment.
