Landrieu Could Accept ANWR Trade-Off
By Amy Harder, NationalJournal.com
If more offshore drilling provisions were included in a climate and energy bill, then Sen. Mary Landrieu could support protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, the Louisiana Democrat said Tuesday.
"I voted to drill in ANWR, but I understand that there might be some trade-offs necessary," she told reporters in the Capitol. "And that could be one of the trade-offs to protect ANWR, to open up drilling in other places."
"The senators from Alaska are going to have a lot to say about that," she added.
Indeed, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, has been pushing ANWR lately, saying that drilling must be a possibility for her to support any bill. "To secure my vote on a climate bill, we have to develop a good policy," Murkowski said last week, according to The Hill. "In my mind, that good policy would include ANWR as part of a domestic production title."
