Graham Wants Immigration Off The Table

By Darren Goode, NationalJournal.com

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said this afternoon that Democrats need to completely take immigration off the table this year before he helps pass a climate and energy bill.

"How much clearer can I be? Immigration brought up this year is nothing but a political stunt that will divide the country," Graham told reporters. He said immigration reform "has no chance in hell of passing" this year. "Nobody believes it will pass, right? Does anybody believe it will pass? I don't believe it will pass," he said.

"I think I've made it perfectly clear that if you bring up immigration you're breaking faith with me," he added. "The faith was broken when immigration was interjected in the 11th hour."

But Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., suggested that Graham was the one playing politics, pointing out that he had been pushing for attention to be paid to immigration reform. "As far as breaking faith goes, Senator Graham has been demanding Democratic leadership on immigration for months, so it's difficult to understand why we have gotten this reaction to Reid demonstrating his commitment to the issue," Manley said in an email.

CongressDaily will have more on this story tomorrow morning.
